Migration of Jacob ZEIGLER and Mary Ann PENDARVIS

1. Jacob ZEIGLER, born 10 Aug 1782 in Bamberg County, South Carolina; died 28 Aug 1838 in Midway Community, Bamberg, South Carolina, son of Michael ZEIGLER and Martha PIQUOTT. He married on 6 Jan 1805 in South Carolina Mary Ann PENDARVIS, born 24 Jun 1791 in Fairfield County, South Carolina; died 7 Dec 1861 in Bamberg County, South Carolina, daughter of Joseph PENDARVIS and Anne SALLEY.

Notes for Jacob ZEIGLER: Zeigler family Bible, Southern Genealogists Exchange Quarterly, Spring 1978, Vol. 19, pg. 85 indicates death 28 Aug 1838. Jacob had been going to school and living in Charleston and came to Bamberg about 1800. On 18 January 1806 Michael Zeigler deeded to Jacob Zeigler his right, claim, and title to "the within premises, having received consideration for the same."

Notes for Mary Ann PENDARVIS: Zeigler family Bible, Southern Genealogists Exchange Quarterly, Spring 1978, Vol. 19, pg. 85. (see 1811 lawsuit in Court of Equity by Gideon Jennings against George and Mary Boutnight) After the death of her mother Ann Daniel and her older brother Nathaniel, came with their father, James, to the Orangeburg area where they are listed in the 1800 census. James purchased 7,000 acres of land near Orangeburg as an investment for his daughter Ann Daniel. In 1804 he deeded this land to Michael Zeigler, Jacob's father, in a trust for his daughter Ann Daniel. Ann, the wife of Jacob Zeigler, and the woman buried in the Felder-Zeigler Cemetary in Bamberg, SC is not Ann Daniel, but Ann Pendarvis. She was the daughter of Joseph Pendarvis and Anne Salley. Ann Daniel either never existed or died as a child. Ann Pendarvis Zeigler is mentioned in the court records concerning her grandfather Brand Pendarvis' estate as late as 1811. She is mentioned in her mother's 1827 will. She is alluded to in her sister Ursula's 1840 obituary.

Children of Jacob ZEIGLER and Mary Ann PENDARVIS were as follows:

a. Eliza Harriet ZEIGLER, born 13 Jan 1806 in Bamberg County, South Carolina; died 18 Jan 1806 in Bamberg County, South Carolina.

b. Nathaniel Daniel ZEIGLER, born 21 May 1807 in Barnwell, South Carolina; died 26 Dec 1876; buried in Zeigler Family Cemetery, Quincey, Florida. He married (1) on 2 Nov 1827 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, Mary Elizabeth BRUTON, born 14 Sep 1807; died abt 1860; buried in Zeigler Family Cemetery, Quincey, Fl.; (2) on 21 Feb 1861 Sarah ULMER, died bef 1870. No know issue.

c. Mary Washington ZEIGLER, born 5 Mar 1809 in South Carolina; died 29 Oct 1892 in Bainbridge, Ga.; buried in Green Shade Cemetery Decatur County, Gaeogia. She married (1) on 20 Sep 1829 in Barnwell District, South Carolina. Daniel Jefferson BRUTON, born 14 Sep 1807 in Barnwell, South Carolina; died 21 Aug 1858 in Bainbridge, Ga.; buried in Green Shade Cemetery Decatur County, Ga., son of Aquilla BRUTON and Rebecca ODOM; (2) on 5 May 1864 William B. DUNLOP, born 1800.

Notes for Mary Washington ZEIGLER: Zeigler family Bible, Southern Genealogists Exchange Quarterly, Spring 1978, Vol. 19, pg. 85. Soon after the marriage they moved to Florida, Key West, being one of the places. They lived there for several years then moved to Decatur County, Georgia, and in 1858 the came to Bainbridge. Mr. Bruton died that same year. Mary married again in 1864 to Mr. William B. Dunlop formerly of SC. Mr. Dunlop lived only a few years after their marriage. Mary was the mother of ten children several of which died at birth or in early childhood. Several small graves can be seen in the family plot in Green Shade Cemetery in Decatur County a few miles south of Bainbridge, Ga. Mary was a member of the Methodist Church. She and her husband Daniel Jefferson Bruton are buried at Green Shade Cemetery in the family plot. There is no known issue in the union between Mary Zeigler and William Dunlop.

d. William ZEIGLER, born 28 Dec 1810 in Barnwell, South Carolina; died 14 Jul 1881 in Lowndes County, Georgia; buried in Sunshine Plantation Family Cemetery, Lowndes County, Ga. He married (1) on 4 Apr 1830 Elizabeth T. HOWELL, born 21 Dec 1810 in Barnwell, South Carolina; died 16 May 1867 in Lowndes County, Georgia; buried in Sunshine Plantation Family Cemetery, Lowndes County, Ga.; (2) on 21 Oct 1874 Columbia SHELTON, born 15 Mar 1831.

Notes for William ZEIGLER: William Zeigler and Elizabeth moved to Lowndes County, Ga. from Barnwell District SC about 1842. They settled near Clyattville, Ga. and named their plantation "Sunshine". Here they reared their family of eight children. Their home burned in later years, but the markers in the family burying grounds are still in view along the old Valdosta-Bellville road. William and Elizabeth are buried at "Sunshine" along with several of their children and grand-children. REF: Georgia DAR Historical Collections, pg. 383, William and Elizabeth Howell Zeigler, family Bible. There is no known issue in the union between Columbia Shelton and William Zeigler.

e. Ann Eliza ZEIGLER, born 28 Aug 1813 in Bamberg County, South Carolina; died 4 Apr 1817 in Bamberg County, South Carolina.

f. Martha Mildred ZEIGLER, born 2 Dec 1815 in Bamberg County, South Carolina; died 18 Jun 1858 in Bamberg County, South Carolina; buried in Felder-Zeigler Cemetery, Bamburg, South Carolina. She married (1) on 1 Jan 1832 Johannes WEISSINGER, born 20 Mar 1801; died 21 Dec 1843; buried in Felder-Zeigler Cemetery, Bamburg, South Carolina; (2) in 1846 in Bamberg County, South Carolina Henry HUTTO, born 1815 in Bamberg County, South Carolina; died 12 Apr 1865 in CSA, son of William HUTTO and Lucy MONTGOMERY. Henry HUTTO had two plantations, and 60 Negro slaves. Henry was also in the Indian Wars.

g. Elizabeth Jane ZEIGLER, born 19 Sep 1818; died 13 Sep 1901; buried in Felder-Zeigler Cemetery, Bamburg, South Carolina. She married on 22 Jul 1837 Evan Darley FELDER, born 24 Oct 1806 in Barnwell District, South Carolina.; died 17 Oct 1853 in South Carolina; buried in Felder-Zeigler Cemetery, Bamburg, South Carolina, son of David FELDER and Margaret Elizabeth GUESS.

h. Jacob Jefferson ZEIGLER, born 14 Jun 1821 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died 28 May 1864 in Lowndes County, Georgia; buried in Haw's Shop, Virginia. He married on 8 Mar 1846 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina Mary Ann Barbara CATES, born 1 Dec 1829 in Barnwell, South Carolina; died 12 Apr 1904 in Lowndes County, Georgia; buried in Old Lake Park Cemetery, Lake Park, Ga., daughter of John D. CATES and Emily Hoffman CATES.

Notes for Jacob Jefferson ZEIGLER: Jacob Jefferson Zeigler, Jr. moved to Lowndes County, Ga. in April 1846. He was instrumental in establishing the first Methodist Church in Lake Park, Ga. Jacob Jefferson served as Justice of Peace, 663rd. District of Lowndes, County He owned land lots no. 151 and 170, in the 16th. land district of Lowndes, County on which he lived. He was killed in a battle at Haw's Shop, Va., and is believed to be buried there. He was killed May 28, 1864, while serving in the Confederate Army. His widow was granted a years support out of his estate in December, 1871, and was granted a dowery out of the estate at the June term of Lowndes Superior Court in 1872. On February 25, 1881, she with her daughters, Mrs. Hinley, Mrs. Alderman and Mrs. Manning conveyed to the sons Jacob D., John W. and B.F. Zeigler, portions of lots no. 151 and 170, which included the old home place, This was sold to the Langdale County during the depression years.

i. Henry Monroe ZEIGLER, born 28 Apr 1824 in Barnwell, South Carolina; died 19 Apr 1867 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; buried in Hays Cemetery, Bamberg, South Carolina. He married on 11 May 1848 in South Carolina Mary Ann HAYS, born 24 Feb 1830; died 4 Jul 1873 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; buried in Hays Cemetery, Bamberg, South Carolina, daughter of Edward HAYS and Margaret HARTZOG.

j. James Wesley ZEIGLER, born 31 Mar 1828; died 25 Apr 1921.

k. Martin Govan ZEIGLER, born 2 Mar 1830 in Bamberg County, South Carolina; died 13 Sep 1888 in Abbeville, South Carolina; buried in Long Cane Cemetery, Abbeville, South Carolina. He married on 1 Nov 1849 in Cokesbury, South Carolina Lavinia Ann Frances DUNWOODY, born 1 Nov 1830 in St. Matthews, Orangeburg, South Carolina; died 20 Jun 1908 in Anderson, South Carolina; buried 1908 in Buried Melrose Cemetery, Abbeville, South Carolina, daughter of Samuel DUNWOODY (REV) and Lavinia Ann F. SNEAD.

l. Joseph Marion ZEIGLER, born 1831; died 1892. He married [---] LINDER. There is no know issue in the union between Joseph Marion Zeigler and [---] Linder.
