First Families of Orangeburgh District, South Carolina

Connor (Conner)

WILLIAM CONNOR, the son of PETER CONNOR and ISABELLA ____, was baptized 23 Mar 1744 in Saintfield, County Down, Ireland[3] and died in Orangeburgh District, South Carolina. He married MARY ____ before 1768. She was born abt. 1742[1].

On 23 Feb 1768, William Conor, age 24, and Mary Conor, age 26, stated that they had arrived from Ireland on the Snow Gregg and applied for Bounty for their passage and provisions[1]. On the same date William Conor petitioned for a Warrant of Survey on 200 acres of land, indicating a family size of three[1]. From this we infer that they had one child under two with them as no bounty was paid for children under two. The child is assumed to be William, named after his father.

William's land was surveyed on 23 Apr 1768, granted on 29 Jul 1768, and he filed a memorial on it on 2 Sep 1768[4,5,6]. The land was located in a part of Polk Swamp and Bay Branch, called Clayton's Bay.

There is a monument to William Connor in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery in Bowman, SC which says: William Connor Head of the Connor Clan in South Carolina who came from Ireland in the early 1700's and settled near Ebenezer Church[2].
