Samuel VARNEDOE (SR), born 15 Feb 1754 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; christened 25 Aug 1754 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 1837 in St Helena Parish, Louisiana; buried in Louisiana, son of Leonhard VARNEDOE and Sirrah HUTTO. He married (1) Sarah NEWSOM, born in South Carolina; (2) Nancy HERLONG. Notes for Samuel VARNEDOE (SR): 1754 On Sunday August 25th in Orangeburgh Church. Samuel, son of Leonhard and Sarah Warnedow; born Febr. 15th 1754. Suscept. Jacob Koonen, Isaac Hottow and Ann wife of Peter Griffice. (Rev. Giessendanner) PVT, Militia, 1781. Samuel Vernado, wife, seven children, two negros issued passport in GA on March 18, 1811 to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians. One for Messrs. Samuel Vernado, and James Hughes the former with his wife seven children and two negroes, and the latter with his wife nine children and two negroes, and one passport for Mr. John O. Macker, with his wife and three children, Mrs. Sarah Macker and nine negroes, all from Orangeburgh district of South Carolina. Migrated to Mississippi in 1809 and settled on the Mississippi - Louisiana line near Osyka, Pike County, MS. DAR 675741. Samuel Varnado on the 1813 tax list, Marion Co., MS (2 slaves) Also, Moses and Lenord. Passport issued by Governor of GA on Wed 1st Nov 1809, also on passport was brother Moses, William Boile and John Shilling. Children of Samuel VARNEDOE (SR) and Sarah NEWSOM were as follows: a. Leonhard VARNEDOE, born 1777 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 24 Dec 1864 in Pike County, Mississippi. He married (1) in South Carolina Rachel SCHILLING, daughter of John Henry SCHILLING and Ann Margaret MCLENNON; (2) Sarah BALLARD; (3) Sallie AMACKER; (4) Eliza MCELVEEN. The Schilling family was from Orangeburg originally, and left the area for 1st) Georgia (Jones Co.) where they obtained a Passport (with the Varnado's) and 2nd) made their way to Washington Parish, LA, Pike Co., MS, area. There most stayed for several generations, some left after a while, heading west to western LA, Texas and even into OK. b. Elizabeth VARNEDOE, born 1778 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 1840. She married Leonard Vincent REEVES. c. Moses VARNEDOE, born 15 Feb 1781 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 17 May 1855 in Marion County, Mississippi He married (1) [---] WARD, daughter of Turner WARD; (2) on 2 Sep 1817 in Mississippi Nancy WARD, born 22 May 1785 in North Carolina, daughter of Turner WARD. Moses Varnado on the 1813 tax list, Marion Co., MS (2 slaves) Also, Samuel and Lenord. d. Arcadia VARNEDOE, born 1784. She married Samuel James DOUGHARTY. e. Sarah VARNEDOE, born 1785 in South Carolina; died 23 Aug 1844 in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana.. She married John Jacob AMACKER, born in South Carolina; died abt Jan 1815 in Louisiana, son of Jacob AMAKER and Rachel RUMPH. Sept. 18, 1844, Nathaniel Amacker is appointed Admistrator of estate of Sarah Amacker. f. George VARNEDOE, born 1786 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died 1841. He married in 1811 in Mississippi Prudence Luce CORY. No children lived to maturity. A George Vernedo from Orangeburgh was issued a passport by Governor of GA March 2, 1810. g. Nathaniel VARNEDOE, born 1790 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 1856 in Midway, Georgia; buried in Liberty County, Georgia. He married (1) Ann T. JONES, born 23 Mar 1794; died 27 Mar 1837; (2) Eleanor RANDOLPH. Rev. James Crosby, born 1 Sept. 1837 was reared in the home of Nathaniel Varnedoe, a deacon in the Midway Church. Ann T JONES was grandaughter of Moses Way. h. Samuel VARNEDOE (JR), born 1792 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 26 Sep 1874 in Pike County, Mississippi; buried in Louisiana. He married on 8 Mar 1814 in Pike County, Mississippi Kiziah NEWSOM, born 1792 in South Carolina; died 1881, daughter of John NEWSOM and Sarah HARP. Samuel Varnado on the 1813 tax list, Marion Co., MS (2 slaves) Also, Moses and Lenord. i. Mary VARNEDOE, born 1794 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 1886 in Clairborne County, Mississippi. She married on 14 Apr 1814 in South Carolina David HERLONG, born 14 Apr 1789 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 16 Dec 1864 in Mississippi, son of Eldred Nicholas HERLONG. David Herlong migrated to Mississippi Territory about 1810. GA passport issued on November 2, 1810. j. Isham VARNEDOE, born 1795 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died in St. George Parish, Effingham Co., Georgia.. He married (1) Drusilla GILL; (2) Margaret Peggy HOPE, born 18 May 1815. Children of Samuel VARNEDOE (SR) and Nancy HERLONG were as follows: k. William Pearl VARNEDOE, born 1811. He married Rebecca THOMPSON. l. Henry VARNEDOE. m. Clarissa VARNEDOE, born 1814; died 1864. She married Henry David STRICKLAND, born 1805; died 1870. Some do not list n. Rachel VARNEDOE, born 1812 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina.
