1. Jesse1 RAMBO, born 9 Oct 1778 in South Carolina; died 16 Dec 1860 in Gwinett County, Georgia, son of Swan RAMBO JR and Elizabeth PINSON Rambo. He married on 22 Oct 1801 in South Carolina Mary HUMPREY, born 15 Oct 1780; died 9 Aug 1862 in Gwinett County, Georgia.

Notes for Jesse RAMBO: See "Jesse Rambo" from Writings of Judge Winn in HISTORY OF GWINNETT COUNTY by Flannigan, pp. 356ff. Jesse is described as an odd genius, full of eccentricities and quaint sayings. "He was queer in his looks, queer in his talk, queer in his notions, queer in his habits, queer in everything. We miss the old man from our town with his good humor, his anecdotes, his droll sayings and expressions." According to this article, Jesse had one son, Kinchin. The same book gives information on the fact that Jesse was a slave owner: In 1840 - Jesse had 19; in 1850 - Jesse had 18; in 1860 - Jesse had 18. Jesse's farm in 1860 contained 510 acres. The 1800 census for Barnwell County, South Carolina, lists his household as having 1 male between 16 and 26, 1 female between 16 and 26, and 1 female over 45, who is believed to be Jesse's mother, the widow of Swan Rambo, Jr. Jesse's household in the Barnwell County 1810 census lists 1 male under 10 Kinchin, 1 male between 26 and 45, and 1 female between 26 and 45. The next census, in 1820, lists Jesse and his family living in Barnwell County; the members of the household were 1 male between 16 and 26, 1 male between 26 and 45, and 1 female between 26 and 45." In the 1830 Census, Gwinnett County, Georgia, Jesse Rambo heads a household of one male and one female, both age 40-50; and eleven slaves. Jesse and his family moved from South Carolina between 1820 and 1830. Jesse is listed as head of a household in Gwinnett County in 1840; in the 1850 Census, Gwinnett County, Loran ? District, Georgia: JESSE RAMBO, age 72; born in South Carolina. Farmer, owning real estate valued at $4000. MARY RAMBO, AGE 70. 1860 Census, Gwinett County, Lawrenceville P. O., Georgia JESSE RAMBO, age 82; born in South Carolina. Could not read or write. Farmer, owning real estate valued at $540; personal property of $9, 490. MARY RAMBO, wife, age 80. In the state archives at Columbia, SC, two surveys of land for Jesse Rambo, both on Hollow Creek. One tract of 69 acres was surveyed on 15 January 1817, and received on 27 January 1817. The second tract, of 33 acres, was surveyed December 1817 and received on 1 Feb 1818.. The Jan document carries the signatures of both Jesse and Kinchin. Rambo's Mill appears on Hollow Creek on an early map of Barnwell County Two affidavits dated Sept and Oct 1818 confirming that Jesse was married to Mary some considerable time before the birth of his son Kinchin. "Direct Index to Deeds--Barnwell County" also lists Jesse Rambo as grantor and Daniel Hicks as grantee in 1799 of 21 acres on Hollow Creek. In 1830 as a member of Georgia Militia District Number 407, Jesse had a lucky draw in the land lottery: Land, Section 2, Fifth District, Lot 97, 160 acres, which would be in the newly created Gilmer County. The land was granted before January, 1838. According to the Gwinett Daily News, May 14, 1978, Jesse Rambo's home still exists and was being restored by its owner: The house is included in a historical tour guide and newsletter published by the Gwinnett Historical Society 1968-1974, reprinted in 1979.

Children of Jesse RAMBO and Mary HUMPREY were as follows:

a. Kinchin RAMBO, born 5 Feb 1802 in South Carolina; died 21 May 1882 in Floyd County, Georgia. He married Mary Ann PRIOR Rambo, born 4 Nov 1807 in South Carolina; died 2 Nov 1891 in Floyd County, Georgia.

Notes for Kinchin RAMBO: A copy of Rev. Kinchin Rambo's diary, written in his own hand, is on file at the Gwinnett Historical Society in Lawrenceville, GA. He writes that he was baptised Nov. the 3rd Sabbath 1826. On April 13, 1832, he was licensed to preach; and he was ordained in the Redland Church April 20, 1833. He states his purpose as keeping a record of "such acts of my ministerial life, as Ordinations, Baptisms, Constitutions, Marriages, etc." and he proceeds to do so from 1832 to Sept. 5, 1880. On Oct. 14, 1875, he makes the following notation: "I have assisted in the ordination of 11 preachers and in the constitution of 9 churches and in the ordination of 19 Deacons and baptized 108 persons." Probate records for Kinchin's estate are in the Floyd County Courthouse in Rome, GA. Henry Van Rambo served as administrator of his father's estate. Receiving distributions were S. J. Loyd, guardian of F. C. Loyd; M. L. and M. S. Hood; J. T. and J. E. Bankston; B. M. and M. L. Bailey; Wm H Rambo replaced in later distributions by William's heirs, Z. S. Rambo and others; and A. K. and M. L. Rambo. Loyd was the minor son of Kinchen's daughter Martha, deceased. Millie Hood, Jane Bankston, William Rambo, and A. K. Rambo were all children of Kinchen's son Cyrenius, deceased. The appraisment of the estate was for $3625, including $3000 for the farm and $400 in various notes and accounts. Books were valued at $10. Documents include the sale of 100 acres of Lot 314 and 7 acres of lot 299, 4th Dist, 4th Sect. for $1660.
