HUGO SHERIDAN ACKERMAN MEMORIAL
From The Orangeburgh German-Swiss Newsletter, Summer 2002.
Many OGSGS members hold fond memories of Hugo Sheridan Ackerman, Orangeburg historian and archivist of the Orangeburg County Historical Society, who assisted them for many years with their genealogical research at the A.S. Salley Archives.
After a decade of residence at the Methodist Oaks retirement home, Mr. Ackerman died July 9, 2002, at the age of 91. He was laid to rest in Sunnyside Cemetery, Orangeburg.
Following a career of teaching history and journalism in the local high school, he worked as a volunteer, researching, gathering, and organizing the collection of historical and genealogical data at the Archives building. His love of history and his passion for newspapers led him back into the early available records to glean facts about people and events which he recorded and entered into the permanent files that continue to serve researchers today.
In recognition of his untiring efforts in assisting OGSGS members (even before the Society was organized in 1981) the Society presented to the Historical Society a portrait of Mr. Ackerman which now hangs in the Archives as a token of appreciation for his support and assistance during the formative years of the Gemam-Swiss Society.
Mr. Ackerman's contribution to the collection and preservation of historical materials remains an immeasurable and invaluable legacy. His genial and gentle manner, his keen scholarship, and his generous spirit in giving of himself and his knowledge have endeared him to many people far and wide. His gift for teaching and for fostering an appreciation of history touched the lives of many Orangeburg students, among whom are several officers and numerous members of OGSGS.
